Octoby Justyn Barnestags: 1970s, Elton John, new music Nothing new here, but the album is featured on SDE today. Playing the song for the third time - enjoying it more it each time. But I'm buying the Deluxe on this one no matter what. I may bypass the 2-Disc if it's day and date. Hope the Deluxe comes to HDTracks or Pono or the like. BTW, I thought The Diving Board was the worst - no matter how many times I've tried to relisten. This single is getting me very excited about the LP - (love the cover, too). This song, to my ears, sounds like it fits on the vastly underrated and under-promoted "The Captain and the Kid". Hopefully we get that pre- The Diving Board Elton quality streak we've enjoyed since Songs from the West Coast. Even with lossy playback, it's much more "open" than the two predecessors. Synth with that "raw" element I love on The Union. "Looking Up" shows he's got the energy of a 50 year old! Not bad considering his real age. Not another pedantic "single" (whatever that means these days) like "Home Again" from the awful The Diving Board or "You're Never Too Old" (which was plodding, but not indicative of the entirety of the excellent if muddy-sounding The Union). But yeah - a nicer, much more "radio friendly" tune with piano, guitars, and real drums - a good feeling song - good rhythm. A winner! Upbeat - not the most creative melody or most inventive.
